Fleet Update Strategy for ELO Devices
Share
Why a formal update plan matters
Unplanned updates create outages and inconsistent behavior. A written plan reduces support tickets and keeps all sites aligned. It also protects security by keeping firmware and apps current.
Define device groups
Group devices by store type, region, and role. Example groups include menu boards, customer kiosks, and staff terminals. Use consistent names that map to your reporting. This lets you target updates precisely and roll back safely.
Version control
Keep a version ledger for firmware, Android builds, apps, and peripheral drivers. Store it in a shared document. Record the current version, the proposed version, and the date of change. Add a short reason for every change.
Staged rollout
Use a three stage flow.
Pilot group. Five to ten devices in friendly locations.
Wave one. Ten to twenty percent of the fleet after pilot success.
Global. All remaining devices after wave one stability.
Hold back a small canary group on the previous version for one week as insurance.
Change window and checklist
Schedule updates during low traffic hours. Freeze all content changes during the window. Verify power and network stability. Confirm storage space on each device. Back up local assets if needed. Announce the window to store managers.
Health checks after the update
Confirm device online status, app launch on boot, touch response, audio if used, brightness schedule, and accessory function such as scanners and readers. Compare metrics against the previous week.
Rollback plan
Keep the prior firmware and app builds ready. Document the exact steps to revert. Assign an owner for rollback decisions. Set a clear rollback trigger such as error rate above a defined threshold.
Final Thoughts
A repeatable update method keeps fleets stable and secure. Group devices, stage changes, verify health, and maintain a rollback path. With this approach you update with confidence rather than hope.
