Understanding Firmware Rollback

Each ELO display stores two firmware partitions: the active image and a protected backup. When a new version installs, the system validates it through checksums. If errors appear or administrators request a downgrade, the backup can be reactivated instantly.

Rollback never overwrites configuration files. Display brightness, network credentials, and app settings remain intact unless explicitly reset.

Triggering Rollback

Rollbacks can be performed in two ways: locally through recovery mode or remotely via ELOView.
For local recovery, power off the device, press and hold the designated recovery key, then select “Restore Previous Version.”
For remote rollback, log into ELOView, open the device list, choose the target unit, and select “Restore Last Firmware.”

Rollback typically completes in under ten minutes and ends with an automatic restart.

Safety Precautions

Ensure power stability during the rollback process. Do not unplug or reboot manually. The display’s indicator light blinks until the sequence finishes.
After rollback, confirm the version number in system information before reconnecting peripherals.

Testing After Rollback

  1. Open your main kiosk app and confirm proper scaling.

  2. Test touch accuracy.

  3. Verify audio, camera, and peripheral drivers.

  4. Observe temperature readings during the first hour to confirm fan or thermal profiles returned correctly.

Example

A healthcare company updated 40 ELO devices and discovered that a new firmware build interfered with their patient-queue software.
Using ELOView, administrators rolled back every device remotely to the previous stable release within one hour. No data loss or technician dispatch was required.

Best Practice

Keep a record of firmware releases and changelogs. Test updates on two to three devices before deploying fleet-wide. If problems arise, rollback acts as a safety net.

Final Thoughts

Firmware rollback prevents disruption. With built-in dual partitions and remote control, ELO ensures upgrades never compromise reliability.
